Assam verdict jolts Gaurav Gogoi as BJP strengthens grip
Growing up, Gaurav Gogoi saw his father Tarun Gogoi lead the Congress to a three-term run in Assam. On Monday, that memory stood in sharp contrast as Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP repeated a similar feat, pushing the Congress to near political marginalisation in the state.

For Gaurav Gogoi, deputy leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha and state party chief, the assembly election marked his first major state-level test—but it ended in defeat.

Contesting from Jorhat, the constituency linked closely to his father’s early political journey, the 43-year-old hoped to translate his national stature into local support. However, he lost to BJP veteran and former assembly speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami by over 23,000 votes.

The setback was not limited to Jorhat, with Congress under Gogoi’s leadership failing to retain several Hindu-majority constituencies as sitting MLAs were defeated by BJP challengers. The party’s tally fell to 19 seats from 29 in 2021, while its vote share also dipped, with a strike rate of just 19% compared to the BJP’s 91%.

Gogoi, known for his sharp speeches in Parliament, had built a reputation as one of the Congress’s more articulate national voices. Many in the party believed his Lok Sabha win against the BJP two years ago could be replicated in the assembly polls. However, the results highlighted the gap between national visibility and grassroots electoral strength.

As noted in political circles, his parliamentary interventions “had earned him recognition as one of the party’s most articulate voices,” but this did not translate into voter support on the ground in Jorhat.

The defeat has raised questions within the party about organisational strength versus individual profile, as BJP’s local network and Goswami’s veteran appeal proved decisive.

In the end, voters appeared unconvinced that political legacy or national prominence could substitute for local connect, leaving Gogoi as a prominent voice in Delhi but a leader still struggling to secure electoral traction in Assam.
