The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to release the candidates list for Assam polls on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said the party will hold its first meeting on Tuesday to discuss candidate selection and nominations. “Tomorrow there will be the first meeting over tickets and nominations. The party’s Parliamentary Board will finalise the BJP candidates on Wednesday."

He said names of the candidates will be announced in a single phase. “There will be a single list of candidates. There could be exceptions if one or two constituencies are left pending."

Sarma will file nomination from the Jalukbari assembly seat on March 20. Sarma has won this seat five times, thrice from the Congress and twice from the BJP.

BJP’s ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) stated that it contests polls as an NDA ally. Atul Bora, AGP President, said, “We have been with BJP since 2016. On some seats there is no issue and there is consensus about the party contesting the seat. In seat sharing with BJP, a winning possibility is being seen as the prime criteria.”

Bora added, “On Sunday we had a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Guwahati. Some seats where there are issues, we have informed him. He said that he will discuss the matter in the parliamentary board meeting.”

Bora clarified, “AGP does not want to get engaged in friendly fights in those seats where we have differences with BJP. Friendly fights help the opposition and there are times when friendly fights can lead to great difficulty.”

The Congress was voted out of power in 2016. Currently, the ruling BJP has 64 MLAs in the 126-member Assembly. Among its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has nine MLAs, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) has seven and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) has three members.
