Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that just as large parts of the country have been made Naxalite-free, Assam too can be freed of illegal infiltrators.

Shah challenged the Congress to state in its Assembly election manifesto that it would expel illegal infiltrators if voted to power.

Addressing a public meeting after laying the foundation stone for the 10th Assam Police Battalion (APBn) campus, Shah said, "Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will not dare to include in the party's manifesto that it will expel illegal infiltrators if voted to power. I challenge him to at least mention it in the manifesto."

He alleged that the Congress would not do so because infiltrators constituted its "vote bank". The new APBn campus is being built on 124 bighas of land freed from alleged illegal encroachment. Shah said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had freed 1.5 lakh bighas of land from encroachment.
