Amid intensified campaigning, the Bharatiya Janata Party expelled nine leaders for six years for contesting against officially nominated candidates. Those expelled include Uddhav Das (Barpeta), Jayanta Kumar Das (Dispur), Jitendra Singh Gour (Kaliabor), Amalendu Das (Barkhola), Dhanjit Rabha (Goalpara West), Chakradhar Das (Bongaigaon), Gagan Chandra Haloi (Barpeta), Ankur Das (Kamalpur) and Yashoda Dulal (Shyamal) Rakshit (Lumding).

In a March 27 letter, state BJP president Dilip Saikia said the action was taken under the party constitution. "The party has expelled the workers for six years with immediate effect for contesting against officially nominated candidates," the letter said, citing Clause XXV-9.
