Guwahati: Asom Sonmilito Morcha (grand alliance) of opposition parties remains a non-starter, Communist Party of India (CPI), a constituent of the Morcha, declared that it would contest the polls on its own in seven Assembly constituencies.

The CPI said it would field candidates independently in Sivasagar, Nazira, Titabar, Morigaon, Dhakuakhana, Demow and Gauripur. The proposed candidates include Bishwajit Saikia (Titabar), Dhiren Kachari (Dhakuakhana), Sheikh Mansoor Rahman (Gauripur), Sapan Deka (Morigaon), Krishna Gogoi (Demow) and Kanak Gogoi (Nazira).

In Sivasagar there are four aspirants namely Subhasini Barua, Satyendra Gogoi, Adan Barua and Anup Gogoi.


CPI state secretary Kanak Gogoi said the names were recommended by the party’s district units and would be finalised once the election schedule is announced.

CPI stated there was no response from Congress on seat sharing. It sent a letter for seat sharing discussion in December last year.

The CPI was among seven parties that revived the Asom Sonmilito Morcha in November 2025, projecting a united platform to challenge NDA.

Two other constituents Raijor Dal and the Assam Jatiya Parishad have set January 31 deadline for the Congress to finalise seat-sharing arrangements.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi recently declared that Congress would contest 100 seats.

Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday in Abhayapuri, Bongaigaon district said that Congress is poised to surpass its historic 2011 landslide victory. “There is a tsunami in Upper Assam. We will perform strongly in Central Assam and the Barak Valley as well. In 2026, Congress will break the 2011 result".

In the 2011 Assembly elections, Congress had secured 78 seats. Assam has 126 assembly seats and is likely to go to polls early this year.

In the present assembly BJP has 64 MLAs, while its allies — Asom Gana Parishad, United People’s Party Liberal and Bodoland People’s Front — have nine, seven and three legislators, respectively. In the Opposition, the Congress has 26 MLAs, the All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) 15, the CPI(M) one, and one Independent.
