Guwahati: Around 21 illegal migrants from Bangladesh were pushed back from Sribhumi district in Assam in a late-night operation, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

In a post on X, Sarma said that the action was carried out around 12:30 am.

“Alert eyes. Midnight action. At 12:30 AM sharp, 21 illegal migrants were sent back to their respective country, thanks to the ever watchful @sribhumipolice,” he wrote.

“Apprehended. Documented. Sent back home. Seems like while most people were dreaming, our police were wide awake doing the night shift for the nation. Sleep can wait when duty calls,” he added.

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya recently said that out of 1.7 lakh declared illegal foreigners in the state, only 467 have been repatriated so far.

Unfurling the national flag at Khanapara during Republic Day celebrations on January 26, Acharya said that since inception up to October 31, 2025, Assam has referred 4,34,922 cases of suspected nationality to Foreigners’ Tribunals. Of these, 3,56,714 cases have been disposed of, resulting in 1,69,812 persons being declared illegal foreigners from the specified territory.

“A total of 467 illegal foreigners (457 convicted foreigners and 10 declared foreigners) have been repatriated to their country of origin through the process of deportation,” he said.

He also said that under the Modernisation of Prisons Project of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the establishment of a high-security jail at Hajo in Kamrup district for 150 inmates is underway.

Acharya added that 14 border outposts and 14 patrol posts are operational in coordination with the Border Security Force and local police along the India-Bangladesh border in Cachar, Sribhumi, Dhubri and South Salmara districts.
