Cabinet clears Rs 2.79 lakh crore package: Rabi MSP hike for six crops, Rs 1.86 lakh crore for PM DHARA, Rs 1,790 crore for Delhi traffic system

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a series of major decisions, including the Rabi Price Policy for the 2027-28 marketing season, a large renewable energy programme and an intelligent traffic management system for Delhi.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decisions after the Cabinet meeting. The total value of the three decisions highlighted by the government stood at Rs 2,79,157 crore.

The biggest allocation, at Rs 1,86,405 crore, is for the PM DHARA (Developing Harmonized and Accelerated Renewable Energy Access) initiative. The government has also approved Rs 1,790 crore for an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) in the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

The Cabinet has separately approved the Rabi Price Policy for the Rabi Marketing Season 2027-28, with an estimated payout of Rs 90,962 crore to farmers.

Rabi MSP 2027-28: New minimum support prices for six crops

The government has revised the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for six major Rabi crops for the 2027-28 marketing season.

The new MSP rates, according to the Cabinet presentation, are:

The MSP is the government-announced minimum price at which eligible crops are procured under the applicable procurement mechanism. The latest decision comes ahead of the Rabi sowing cycle.

For the previous Rabi Marketing Season 2026-27, wheat MSP was Rs 2,585 per quintal, while barley was Rs 2,150, gram Rs 5,875, masoor Rs 7,000, rapeseed-mustard Rs 6,200 and safflower Rs 6,540.

Rs 90,962 crore estimated payout for farmers

The Cabinet presentation put the estimated financial payout to farmers under the Rabi Price Policy at Rs 90,962 crore.

The six crops covered under the decision are wheat, barley, gram, lentil (masoor), rapeseed-mustard and safflower.

The government has used the projected cost of production and the corresponding margin over cost while setting the revised MSPs.

PM DHARA gets Rs 1.86 lakh crore allocation

Another major Cabinet decision is the approval of PM DHARA, with an allocation of Rs 1,86,405 crore, according to the presentation released after the meeting.

The programme is focused on developing and accelerating access to renewable energy and forms part of the government's broader push towards expanding clean-energy infrastructure.

Delhi to get Rs 1,790 crore for intelligent traffic management

The Cabinet has also approved Rs 1,790 crore for an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) in the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

The system is expected to use technology-based traffic management tools to improve monitoring and management of traffic movement across the capital.
