New Delhi: A sharp decline in tomato prices in the last week of August led to a marginal reduction in the prices of vegetarian and non-vegetarian thali, according to a Crisil report.

While the price of vegetarian thali declined to ₹33.80 in August from ₹34 the previous month, that of non-vegetarian thali reduced by 30 paise to Rs 67.30.

"Of the 24% rise (year-on-year) in the vegetarian thali cost, 21% can be attributed solely to the price of tomato, which rose 176% on-year to Rs 102/kg in August...," the ratings firm said in the report released on Thursday.

Thali prices indicate that there was little respite from inflation in August. Experts indicate that retail inflation likely stayed above the 7% mark for the second consecutive month. At 7.4%, inflation in July had breached the Reserve Bank of India's target upper band of 6% and was the highest in 15 months.

Data on retail inflation for August will be released on September 12.

However, there may be some respite starting September, as tomato prices have eased and the government has reduced prices of LPG cylinders by ₹200, the research note indicated.
