“The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) can invest up to 15% of investment in equity as per the pattern of investment notified by the central government and the internal guidelines of EPFO approved by the central board of trustees’ (CBT) of Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF),” the minister said in response to a question in Lok Sabha.
“However, EPFO invests only in Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) and not in individual share and stock through ETF-manufacturers, including SBI-Mutual Fund and UTI-Mutual Fund,” the minister said.
According to the minister, a joint representation was received from some of the trade unions on the involvement of workers in the decision making process while investing in equity.
“The Finance Investment and Audit Committee (FIAC) and the central board of trustees of EPFO, which are mandated for investing in equities and other instruments, have representatives of workers,” the minister said.
EPFO had invested Rs 27,743 crore, Rs 32,377 crore and Rs 31,025 crore in 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 respectively. Its deposits from contribution stood at Rs 1,87,214 crore in 2018-19, Rs 2,19,325 crore in 2019-20 and Rs 2,18,345 crore in 2021-22.
