Residents of Bengaluru’s Electronics City are on high alert after a leopard was sighted in the area early Tuesday morning. According to sources, the leopard was seen crossing Hosur Road near the Electronics City toll plaza and heading towards the Nettur Technical Training Foundation (NTTF) grounds. The sighting occurred around 3 am, a TOI report stated.

Forest officials on high alert

Following the incident, V Ganesh, assistant conservator of forests for Bengaluru South, confirmed the leopard sighting. “It was sighted around 3am crossing over the highway towards the Nettur Technical Training Foundation (NTTF) premises. However, the cat was not sighted later during the day. Nevertheless, we are on high alert and have deployed LTF (Leopard Task Force) for combing operations,” he said.

Forest authorities suspect the animal may have come from the Bannerghatta National Park area. Ganesh added, “We had inputs about the presence of a leopard in the Jigani area for the last 10 days and it may have come from the Bannerghatta National Park (BNP) side. We suspect that the same leopard may have entered this side of the E-City."

An official from NTTF reported that alerts had been received from the toll plaza regarding the leopard sighting. “Subsequently, we cross-checked all the CCTV footage and there was no trace of the animal. Yet, we have taken all the necessary precautions as we do not know whether it is hiding or has moved away,” the official said.

Leopard also seen in 2023

This is not the first time a leopard has been spotted near Bengaluru’s tech hubs. In October 2023, another leopard was seen in Singasandra, near Kudlu Gate. That leopard was injured in an encounter with forest officials and later died from its wounds.

Meanwhile, in Tumakuru district, two leopards attacked a sheepcote in Madhugiri taluk, killing 32 sheep. The farmer, Mallanna, reported that the leopards attacked his flock early Tuesday morning. By the time his family responded to the commotion, the leopards had fled. Villagers have since demanded compensation for the livestock lost in the attack.

Forest officials are continuing their efforts to track down the leopards and ensure public safety in the affected areas.
