Three thematic funds complete 25 years, offer 14-17% returns since inception
A handful of sector and thematic funds have completed 25 years in the market. Three funds have offered high double-digit returns since inception.

Aditya Birla Sun Life MNC Fund, SBI Magnum Global Fund and Tata Ethical Fund have been in the market for a long time. Even though these schemes fall in the sectoral/thematic category, these schemes are very different from each other and invest in varied investment segments. Here’s a look at their performance since inception:
All these schemes manage AUM over Rs 1,000 crore and have gone through fair share of changes in the last 25 years. Let’s take a look at their individual performances and journeys.
Aditya Birla Sun Life MNC Fund: This is the oldest sectoral fund in the market and manages Rs 3,548 crore with an expense ratio of 2.02%. This scheme was earlier known as Birla MNC Fund. The fund has been managed by Chanchal Khandelwal and Kunal Sangoi since 2021. Even though sector funds are market cap agnostic, this scheme’s portfolio is currently skewed towards mid cap stocks. As the name suggests, the scheme invests in securities of multinational companies. The scheme has beaten its benchmark 6 times since 2010.

SBI Magnum Global Fund: Launched in September, 1994, this fund manages an asset base of Rs 5,476 crore. The scheme is benchmarked against NIFTY MNC TRI. This scheme invests in equity stocks of MNC companies. The fund’s portfolio is a mix of large and mid cap stocks. Hindustan Unilever, Maruti Suzuki India and P&G are the biggest holdings in the portfolio. R Srinivasan has recently taken over as the fund manager of the scheme from Anup Upadhyay.
