Sensex ends in red; metals, power, oil & gas down

The 30-share index ended at 28,036.70, down 126.59 points or 0.45 per cent. It touched a lifetime high of 28,294.01 and a low of 27,963.51.

MUMBAI: The S&P BSE Sensex extended losses for second straight session and closed in the red as profit booking picked up in metals, power and oil & gas sectors.

The 30-share index ended at 28,036.70, down 126.59 points or 0.45 per cent. It touched a lifetime high of 28,294.01 and a low of 27,963.51 in trade today.

The Nifty closed at 8,382.30, down 43.60 points or 0.52 per cent. It hit all-time high of 8,455.65 and a low of 8,360.50 in trade today.

The S&P BSE Midcap Index declined 0.59 per cent and the S&P BSE Smallcap Index was 0.60 per cent lower.

Among the sectoral indices, the S&P BSE Power Index was 1.88 per cent lower, the S&P BSE Metals Index fell 2.27 per cent and the S&P BSE Oil & Gas Index was down 1.39 per cent.

Tata Steel (3.34 per cent), Sesa Sterlite (2.91 per cent), GAIL (2.63 per cent), Tata Motors (2.27 per cent) and BHEL (2.16 per cent) were among the major losers.

Dr Reddy’s Laboratories (up 2.45 per cent), HDFC (up 1.14 per cent), Hindustan Unilever (up 1.03 per cent), Bajaj Auto (up 0.94 per cent) and Bharti Airtel (up 0.67 per cent) were among the Sensex gainers.

The market breadth was positive on the BSE with 1228 gainers against 1833 losers.
