Indian stock market ended at record closing highs on Thursday, driven by strong gains in financial stocks such as ICICI Bank Ltd and Axis Bank.
The benchmark BSE Sensex closed up 0.36 per cent to 38,024.37, a record high, while the broader NSE Nifty ended 0.18 per cent higher at 11,470.70, its highest ever.
India’s third-biggest lender by assets, ICICI Bank ended 4.8 per cent higher at Rs 333.95, while Axis Bank rose 4.35 per cent to Rs 622.20.
“It was a positive day for the stocks as key benchmark indices held firm at higher levels buoyed by strength in select bank stocks. On the sectoral front, the PSU bank index witnessed sharp gains of nearly 3 per cent. Select private bank and metal shares also saw strong buying activity. The healthcare and media indices, on the other hand, closed the day in the red,” said Abhijeet Dey, Senior Fund Manager-Equities, BNP Paribas MF.
