Zoya, the diamond boutique from the House of Tata, presents Finely Crafted Journeys — conversations with women achievers, whose creativity and commitment to their craft have created something distinctive.

This time, Zoya’s muse was celebrated anchor, author and leader Shereen Bhan.

Excerpts from an interview:

What inspired you to pursue your craft?

While doing my master’s in film and television, I interned with Siddhartha Basu and Vir Sanghvi on a current affairs show. I was asked to prepare the audience with a mock debate. This was my first experience of conducting a political debate and discussion and I enjoyed it. It was how I first discovered my instinct for news. The journey into this field may have been by accident but everything after that was anything but. Two decades later, I look back and am immensely proud of being a part of a team that has created a niche for outstanding business journalism in India.

What does creativity mean to you?

Creativity is about having a point of view and expressing it without any fear. We have tried to creatively expand the way people associate with business news and expand the genre. It’s not just about policy discourse or dialogue, we focus on how policy impacts people. I believe creativity is about telling stories that create an impact, creating communities and expanding the way people look at business journalism and business news.

What do you enjoy the most about your craft?

After 19 years, I still enjoy grooming my team. We have a young bunch of reporters, producers and news editors who work together to maintain high quality standards and produce a sharp product every single day, and this inspires me. Secondly, making business news accessible to more people keeps me going. Lastly, I continue to believe in the power of storytelling as it can move people, make a government act and make companies accountable.

Brands need to think about their purpose while creating something special. A brand must tell a story; I have tried to create a differentiated brand with a sharp specialisation for more than a decade. I guess this is what Zoya is also doing. Rhapsodie, the collection I am wearing, is inspired by culinary art and I love food. It’s my biggest indulgence and passion.
