Zoya celebrates ‘Finely Crafted Journeys’ with Mallika Sarabhai

Dancer-choreographer Dr Mallika Sarabhai talks tradition, modernity and honing her craft.

This time Zoya’s muse was Dr Mallika Sarabhai, India’s leading dancer and choreographer, publisher, writer, director, social activist and director, Darpana Academy of Performing Arts.

Zoya, the diamond boutique from the house of Tata, presents ‘Finely Crafted Journeys’ — conversations with women achievers, whose creativity and commitment to their craft have created something distinctive.

This time Zoya’s muse was Dr Mallika Sarabhai, India’s leading dancer and choreographer, publisher, writer, director, social activist and director, Darpana Academy of Performing Arts.

She first came to international notice for playing Draupadi in Peter Brook’s The Mahabharata, considered the greatest theatrical production of the last century. Developing her own style of contemporary dance and dance theatre, she has travelled across the world with her work, which draws attention to issues facing our society today — from the role of women, to environmental issues to human rights. Excerpts from an interview:

What inspired you to pursue your craft?

As I grew up, I watched the sheer beauty of my mother Mrinalini’s work in dance and writing. I was in awe of it and did not think I was capable of anything like that. Many years later, circumstances and pain in my life took the route of manifesting itself through the form I loved the best, performance, dance and theatre. Life is my inspiration, that and the lives of individuals.

What does creativity mean to you?

A surging forth of a new perspective on what is all around, seen through a new lens and brought forward uniquely. The ingredients for us all are the same, but how we cook them, flavour them, what takes precedence, what, if anything, dominates, what subtleties and nuances and leaps of faith one brings forth, that is creativity.

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I enjoy my craft because it involves daily honing of skills, pushing limits, playing with live musicians and dancers; exploring and discovering; juxtaposing of tradition with modernity and reinterpretation of the old in light of today. These are the few things I thoroughly enjoy and I am passionate about. My craft inspires me and keeps me going.
