Nikhat Zareen wins gold at Women's World Boxing Championship. PM Modi, President Kovind call it India's victory

A few days after India’s men’s badminton team won the prestigious Thomas Cup after beating 14-time winner Indonesia, another development has brought cheer back home. Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen won a gold medal at the Women’s Boxing Championship in Istanbul, Turkey.

Zareen defeated Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas to clinch the medal in the 52kg category. With this, Zareen has become the fifth Indian women boxer to win a gold medal at a world championship.

Following her stellar victory, the former junior youth world champion has been flooded with congratulatory messages on social media. Politicians, celebrities, and athletes applauded the 25-year-old boxer.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to congratulate Zareen. The PM also congratulated Bronze medal winners Manisha Moun and Parveen Hooda for their victory.

“Our boxers have made us proud! Congratulations to @nikhat_zareen for a fantastic Gold medal win at the Women's World Boxing Championship. I also congratulate Manisha Moun and Parveen Hooda for their Bronze medals in the same competition,” tweeted PM
President Ram Nath Kovind said that India is proud of her and that her success will motivate youth, especially girls to realise their dreams.

“Heartiest congratulations to Nikhat Zareen for the gold medal at Women’s World Boxing Championship. The nation is proud of her. I am confident that her success will motivate our youth, especially girls to realise their dreams. I wish she continues bringing laurels to the country,” tweeted the President.
MP Kiren Rijiju lauded Zareen’s victory by calling it a huge achievement for India.
Cricketers Irfan Khan and Harbhajan Singh took to Twitter to congratulate the young boxer.
Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar, who recently appeared as a boxer in the sports drama ‘Toofan’ congratulated Zareen on her achievement.
Manisha Moun and Parveen Hooda bagged the Bronze medals after finishing the semi-finals taking India's medal tally to 3 at the world's biggest boxing championship. The event witnessed the participation of 310 boxers from 73 countries. This was the 20th year of the Women's World Championship.

Before Zareen, boxers such as Mary Kom, Jenny RL, Lekha KC, and Sarita Devi have won gold medals at international championships. This is also India's first gold medal since Mary Kom's victory in 2018.

Zareen's victory was also celebrated in her hometown in Telangana. "I am very happy & proud of her (Nikhat Zareen). Inshallah, step by step she will reach the Olympic Games," Zareen's mother Parveen Sultana told ANI.
