Xiaomi to sell unboxed cheaper Redmi 1S on GreenDust, Overcart
NEW DELHI: Xiaomi fans, who have often complained about fewer handsets on sale than demand in the market, have a reason to cheer: they can now get the popular smartphone even cheaper than that offered on Flipkart as the Chinese handset maker will conduct flash sales with refurbished goods e-tailers Overcart and GreenDust.

But there’s a catch — the models that will be sold will either be seal-opened but unused, or have some software issues, hence would be refurbished. Overcart and Green-Dust will hold flash sales of the Redmi 1S smartphones on Monday where a few thousand units will be put up for sale on both sites.

Manu Jain, head of India operations at Xiaomi, when asked whether the company was aiming to mainstream sales of such devices in the Indian market, where most consumers are rapidly taking to using smartphones, told ET, "It (sale of refurbished or unboxed phones) is already happening through offline channels in large markets across the country. Our tie-ups with GreenDust and Overcart, among others, will bring this unorganised market to online, making purchases more reliable for consumers," he said. "If everything goes right, we will scale it up."

Open-box or unboxed phone will be sold for Rs 4,999 while the refurbished version will come with a price tag of Rs 4,599 apiece, on both websites, with separate flash sales for both kinds. Both type of phones will have a sixmonth warranty from the sellers. A new Redmi 1S is available at Rs 5,999 on Flipkart.

The e-tailers intend to make flash sales a regular phenomenon with more models, including the Redmi Note and the Mi 3. The market size in India for returned goods through e-commerce was about $350 million in 2013-14, with an estimated 28 million products being returned, half of which were consumer electronics, according to Overcart’s internal findings. "Mobiles, tablets and accessories make up 30-40 per cent," Alex Souter, co-founder of Overcart, said.

The returns market is set to rise to $1.2 billion by 2017-18, in line with the growth of the country’s burgeoning e-commerce market.

The company expects about 48 million products to be returned by consumers over the next three years. Within this segment, mobile devices will witness an uptrend. "We’re looking at the possibility of having a model where new Xiaomi phones will get sold through Flipkart and refurbished or unboxed will get sold through us," said Hitendra Chaturvedi, founder and chief executive of GreenDust.

"If this is successful, we will only sell these smartphones through our mobile app."

Redmi 2 improves upon the design and build quality, while keeping the same compact size. It is slimmer by a few mm and weighs 133 grams that still feels heavy for a phone of this size, especially when compared to the Lenovo A6000.

The matte finish on the rear panel adds to the phone’s look and also provides a better grip.

Xiaomi has kept the same 4.7-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels on the Redmi 2. It uses Dragontrail glass for added durability. In the limited time we had with the phone, the display impressed with rich colors, good brightness and excellent viewing angles.

The only thing we wish Xiaomi had improved was making the touch sensitive buttons for back, home and menu backlit.

It is responsive, allows you to multitask with ease and offers various little useful tweak and tricks. In our use of the phone, we did not see any lag or sluggishness even with 4 to 5 apps running in the background.

Rear camera unit is the same as Redmi 1s – an 8MP sensor with LED flash capable of recording full HD videos. The front camera has been upgraded to a 2MP unit (Redmi 1s has a 1.6MP sensor).

The camera interface offers manual mode where you can adjust settings like white balance, ISO, contrast, saturation, sharpness and exposure. In our use, the camera took well-detailed shot with minimal noise and seems to be the best camera phone in its price bracket.

We feel that the Redmi 2 is a good successor to the Redmi 1s. It continues to offer excellent specifications and performance at a great price. However, it will have to face stiff competition in the price range.

Brands such as Huawei, Asus and Lenovo are offering phones with similar specifications and a larger 5-inch HD display.
