Woman reaches 325 kg after years of misdiagnosis but loses 159 kg once doctors spot the real cause. Here's her inspiring weight-loss journey
Jameka Mauldin from Detroit struggled with unexplained swelling. She was misdiagnosed for years. Finally, she discovered she had lymphedema and lipedema. This diagnosis changed her life. She fought infections and regained mobility. Jameka lost ove...

“I knew something was wrong,” Jameka recalled. “It wasn’t just fat. It was painful, heavy, and tight. But no one listened.”
Despite her concerns, she was continually dismissed. As her health declined, her weight soared to 325 kilograms and her independence crumbled. Everyday tasks like getting dressed or using the restroom required assistance. The world began to shrink around her.
The Diagnosis That Changed Everything
In 2019, after years of pain and confusion, Jameka finally found her answer. Doctors diagnosed her with lymphedema, a chronic condition that causes fluid buildup and swelling in the body’s tissues. She was also diagnosed with lipedema, a fat-distribution disorder that disproportionately affects women and cannot be fixed with traditional weight loss methods.“Getting a diagnosis changed everything,” Jameka told The Mirror, who first reported her story. “I cried. Not out of fear, but out of relief. I finally had a name for what I was going through.”
The diagnoses were more than labels — they were liberation. For the first time, she wasn’t just being told to work harder. She was being understood.
Beyond the Scale: A Battle of Will
The road to healing wasn’t easy. At her lowest, Jameka was admitted to a care facility where she had to fight off serious infections following surgery. She describes it as her “rock bottom” — the moment when she felt most defeated. But she made herself a promise.
“If I couldn’t walk, I’d crawl. If I couldn’t do it all, I’d just do one thing,” she said. “Every day, I told myself, ‘Just one thing today, Jameka.’”
With this mindset, small victories became milestones. Slowly, she regained her strength, mobility, and independence. Over time, through a combination of lifestyle changes, physical therapy, and specialized liposuction, Jameka shed over 159 kilograms — more than half her body weight.
And she did it without trendy injections, expensive gyms, or miracle surgeries. Her tools were perseverance, knowledge, and finally, a proper diagnosis.
From Patient to Professional
Today, Jameka has returned to work — not as someone in need of care, but as a Certified Nursing Assistant, helping others walk paths she knows all too well.“I went from being cared for to caring for others,” she says. “That’s the full-circle moment that keeps me going.”
Her daughter, 15-year-old Jamya, has been her unwavering source of strength through it all.
“She’s my reason. Every time I wanted to give up, I thought of her.”
“We’re told we’re lazy. That we’re just fat,” she says. “But these are medical conditions. We need doctors who see us, who hear us, and who know what they’re looking at.”
Now with over 102,000 followers on Instagram (@meekmeek2u_), Jameka is planning to write a book and speak publicly about her journey to help others find hope and understanding.
