Ralph Lauren has never been to India. But in a recent interview, the American designer hinted at a fascination for the country and a knowledge of its history.

During the interview, Lauren, born to Belarussian parents, spoke about a jacket evincing a “romantic, somewhat British Raj sensibility, but without being Raj”. The article then mentioned Lauren not having visited India ever, and that to do so would probably spoil his vision. “Instead, he is evoking an India that exists only in a world of his imagining,” the article says.

It then quotes Lauren saying, “This is a world that I’m very proud of. I didn’t go to fashion school; this is all inside (taps his head)”
