Matthew Rhys had a night to remember at the 2026 Emmy Awards. The Welsh actor made television history by winning two lead acting awards at the same ceremony, a feat no actor had achieved before. His wins came for two very different performances, making the achievement even more memorable. But who is Matthew Rhys, and how did he reach this milestone?

Matthew Rhys first bagged the Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series award for his performance in Netflix's The Beast in Me. The win came as a surprise, with the actor beating several strong contenders, including Oscar Isaac for Beef, Riz Ahmed for Bait, Jason Bateman for Black Rabbit and Charlie Hunnam for Monster: The Ed Gein Story.

But Rhys was not done yet.




Later in the ceremony, he won the Lead Actor in a Comedy Series award for Apple TV's Widow's Bay. This time, he competed against Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for Wonder Man, Steve Carell for Rooster, Jason Segel for Shrinking and Martin Short for Only Murders in the Building.

With both victories, Rhys became the first actor in Emmy history to win two lead acting prizes on the same night.

The achievement also gave him a rare distinction. After previously winning the lead drama acting award, Rhys has now won the top acting prize in drama, comedy and limited/anthology series.

Matthew Rhys joins an elite Emmy club

Rhys' latest achievement builds on a career that has already included one major Emmy win.

In 2018, he won Lead Actor in a Drama Series for playing Philip Jennings in FX's The Americans. The series, set during the Cold War, followed Rhys and Keri Russell as Russian KGB agents living undercover in the United States while raising their children.

His 2018 victory meant that his two wins in 2026 completed the three-category sweep.

Before Matthew Rhys, some performers had managed to win multiple acting Emmys during the same ceremony. However, none had won two lead acting awards in one night. James Earl Jones achieved two wins in 1991, while Stockard Channing picked up two supporting actress trophies in 2002.

Rhys has now gone a step further by winning two of the most versatile acting categories at a single ceremony.

He also joins a very small group of performers who have won lead acting Emmys across drama, comedy and limited series. Barbara Stanwyck had previously achieved the feat across the three categories, although her earliest win came before the current division between the comedy and drama races.

Who is Matthew Rhys?

Matthew Rhys is a Welsh actor who has built a successful career across television, film and theatre. Before becoming widely known for The Americans, he gained attention for his role as Kevin Walker in ABC's family drama Brothers & Sisters.

Rhys joined Brothers & Sisters as Kevin Walker, a lawyer and one of the members of the Walker family. The series ran for five seasons and concluded in 2011.

In 2012, he appeared in the BBC Two adaptation of Charles Dickens' unfinished novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood. The two-part drama was later aired in the US by PBS as a feature-length episode.

His biggest television breakthrough came with The Americans. Rhys starred alongside Keri Russell in the series, which followed two Soviet spies posing as an ordinary married couple in suburban America. The show ran from 2013 to 2018 and earned Rhys his first Emmy win.

His 2026 victories now add two more major milestones to that career. He also received two additional Emmy nominations this year as an executive producer, with both nominations connected to The Beast in Me and Widow's Bay.
