PM Modi once took Viswanathan Anand out for a treat

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Viswanathan Anand posted a special message for PM Modi, not just extending birthday wishes but also sharing a personal memory. Recalling an incident from years ago, he shared how a casual conversation about food turned into a memorable moment. While participating in a National Championship in Ahmedabad, Anand mentioned his love for Gujarati Thalis to Modi, who at the time was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. To his surprise, Modi offered to personally take him out to enjoy one of the best Thalis in the city.

True to his word, Modi accompanied Anand to the State Guest House, where they shared a traditional Gujarati meal. “I want to give you the best Thali you can remember,” Anand recalled Modi telling him. For the chess champion, it was a humbling and unforgettable experience. The story has since gone viral, with fans praising the Prime Minister’s warmth and simplicity.

What’s in a Gujarati Thali?

Now, you might be wondering what exactly goes into a Gujarati Thali, and perhaps even craving one yourself. A traditional Gujarati thali is a wholesome, flavour-packed meal that offers a perfect mix of sweet, spicy, and tangy dishes, all served together in generous portions.

A typical thali includes soft flatbreads like rotli or bhakri, served with steamed rice or khichdi. You’ll usually find a comforting lentil dish such as dal or kadhi, along with shaak, seasonal vegetable curries prepared with signature Gujarati spices.

No Gujarati meal is complete without farsan (snacks) like khaman, dhokla, or bhajiya. A refreshing salad such as kachumber, a glass of chaas (spiced buttermilk), tangy pickles or chutneys, and crispy papad are also included. And to finish, there’s always a mithai (sweet dish) like shrikhand, moong dal halwa, or basundi.

Though the exact dishes may vary depending on the region, occasion, or personal preference, the essence of a Gujarati thali remains the same, hearty, comforting, and full of variety.

Returning to Anand's tribute, he also highlighted another moment when PM Modi’s influence extended beyond politics. During the 44th Chess Olympiad held in Chennai in 2022, Modi suggested the idea of introducing a torch relay—a tradition usually reserved for the Olympics. The idea was embraced by the global chess community and has now become a regular feature of the Olympiad, marking a historic first for the sport.
