Eric Dane, best known for his roles in Grey's Anatomy and Euphoria, passed away at the age of 53, less than a year after publicly revealing that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). His death has left fans across the world heartbroken, especially after a deeply emotional video of his final message to his daughters surfaced online.

The California-born actor had shared his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. ALS, the most common form of motor neurone disease, gradually affects muscle control. In a statement released after his passing, his family said he died on Thursday afternoon (February 19) following a brave and determined battle with the illness.

Eric Dane's final message to his daughters

Before his death, Dane recorded an intimate conversation with television producer Brad Falchuk for the show Famous Last Words, which was meant to be released only after he was gone. The episode is now streaming on Netflix and has since gone viral for its emotional weight and honesty.

During the interview, the Hollywood actor spoke openly about his life, the trauma that affected him deeply, his struggles with substance abuse, the love of his family, and the peace he eventually found while facing death. At one point, he admitted that despite being surrounded by people, he often felt lonely. Yet, even while battling ALS, he said he felt unexpectedly light in spirit, explaining that although there was no obvious reason to feel joyful in certain moments, he still did.

The most moving part of the recording came at the end, when Falchuk stepped aside and allowed Dane to speak directly to the camera. His message was addressed to his two daughters, Billie and Georgia, whom he shared with actress and model Rebecca Gayheart.

In his final words, Dane shared four key lessons he hoped his daughters would carry with them.

First, he urged them to live fully in the present. He talked about how he had spent years overthinking past mistakes and worrying about the future. Facing illness forced him to focus on the “now,” and he said that the present moment is all anyone truly has. He encouraged them to value and protect it.

Second, he advised them to fall in love, not only with a person, but with a passion. He recalled discovering his love for acting at a young age and said that it helped him survive his darkest times. He told them to find something that excites and drives them, and to pursue it wholeheartedly.

Third, he stressed the importance of choosing friends carefully. He expressed gratitude for the loved ones who showed up for him during his illness, saying that true friends do not need grand gestures; their presence alone is powerful. He encouraged his daughters to love their friends deeply and hold onto them.

Finally, he told them to fight, to face every challenge with courage and dignity. While ALS was weakening his body, he said it could never take his spirit. He reminded them of their strength and resilience, encouraging them to stand tall no matter what life brings.

Following news of his passing, tributes poured in from colleagues and fans. The Grey’s Anatomy family remembered him as an extraordinary talent and a presence that will never be forgotten.
