Sheikh credited rowing in helping him fine tune his leadership style. “I was rowing from the time I was a child till I was 20,” said Sheikh, during an event in Mumbai. “I didn’t know I was learning from it. All I knew then was that I wanted to be fit and that I loved the sport. But after I grew up, I realised that my leadership style came from rowing. Not from a book I read, not from an early experience. And it has stuck with me till now.”

Don’t rock the boat Sheikh explained that a common goal is the only way an organisation can move forward without, well, rocking the boat. “Internal competition is not good. If the team on the right puts in more effort, you’re going to turn the boat, not move forward. If the effort is not synchronised, the boat will not move ahead. If someone raises their hand higher, there will be an imbalance. If someone only makes 20 strokes a minute while the rest makes 30 strokes, the boat still has to go 20 strokes per minute. The entire team needs to work with that one person to build his capabilities and increase his strength,” he said.
A believer that there is no ‘I’ in team, Sheikh said, “You are never going to achieve anything by yourself; you are going to work with a team, and that team, you are going to lead. Giving yourself to the team and having everyone working together in one direction is important.”
