But how healthy is this trendy coffee blend, really? Gastroenterologist Dr. Pal Manickam weighed in on the fad in an Instagram video, where he broke down the basics. “Ghee coffee, also known as bullet-proof coffee, combines coffee with one to two tablespoons of ghee. The healthy fats from ghee and caffeine from coffee can offer sustained energy,” he said, explaining the name’s origin—making you feel “bulletproof” against hunger.
However, Dr. Manickam also cautioned that while the drink may boost energy, it’s not a complete meal. “Ghee is calorie-dense and significantly increases the calorie content of your coffee. It lacks the nutritional balance of a proper meal, so it shouldn’t replace one,” he added. His final word? “If you like ghee coffee, drink it in small quantities—and definitely avoid caffeine after 3 pm.”
