Vijay's Jana Nayagan creates history: Thalapathy Vijay's farewell film breaks two major records within hours of its release
Thalapathy Vijay's farewell film Jana Nayagan has achieved historic box office milestones within hours of release. The movie set a unique pre-sales record, marking Vijay's third consecutive film with over one million advance tickets. Jana Nayagan ...

Vijay becomes first Indian actor to achieve a 1 million pre-sales hat-trick
Even before the first show began, Jana Nayagan had already made headlines by crossing 1 million ticket sales on BookMyShow. With this achievement, Vijay created a unique record in Indian cinema. Jana Nayagan joined Varisu and The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) as his third consecutive film to cross the 1 million pre-sales mark on the online ticketing platform.
This makes Vijay the first Indian actor to achieve a hat-trick of three consecutive films with over 1 million advance ticket sales on BookMyShow. Soon after the milestone was announced, social media was flooded with congratulatory posts from fans, who celebrated the actor's consistent box office appeal and loyal fan base.
The strong advance booking numbers have also translated into packed theatres, with first-day-first-show screenings witnessing festive celebrations across Tamil Nadu and several other parts of the country.
A political milestone after nearly five decades
Apart from its box office achievements, Jana Nayagan has also entered the history books for another reason.According to Mathrubhumi, with the film releasing after Vijay assumed office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, it has become the first mainstream commercial film in nearly 50 years to feature a serving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in the lead role.
The last leader to achieve a similar feat was legendary actor-politician M.G. Ramachandran (MGR). After becoming Chief Minister in 1977, MGR starred in Madhuraiyai Meetta Sundharapandiyan, which was released in 1978. Interestingly, it also turned out to be his final film as an actor before fully dedicating himself to politics.
Although Tamil Nadu has had several leaders with strong ties to cinema, including M. Karunanidhi, J. Jayalalithaa and M.K. Stalin, none of them had a mainstream theatrical release while serving as Chief Minister. That changes with Jana Nayagan.
A release that overcame several hurdles
The film's journey to theatres was far from smooth. Jana Nayagan was originally scheduled to release during Pongal 2026, but the launch was postponed by more than six months. The delay sparked speculation that Vijay's transition into politics may have influenced the release schedule. The film also suffered another setback when an illegal copy surfaced online ahead of its theatrical release. Despite these challenges, audience excitement remained strong.
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan features a star-studded ensemble led by Vijay. The cast includes Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Narain in key roles.
The film's music has been composed by Anirudh Ravichander, while Sathyan Sooryan has handled cinematography and Pradeep E. Ragav has served as the editor.
Trade expectations for the film remain massive. Industry reports suggest that Jana Nayagan earned around Rs 20 crore in domestic advance bookings, while overseas pre-sales were estimated at approximately Rs 15 crore. Trade analysts are also predicting a worldwide opening close to Rs 90 crore.
For Vijay's fans, Jana Nayagan is more than just another big-screen release. It's Vijay's last dance in cinema!
