Vijay Deverakonda didn’t propose to Rashmika Mandanna once, but twice. He made her ask him 100 times about marriage. Actor reveals the reason

Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna are receiving praises for their chemistry in their latest release, Ranabaali. The couple also took over social media with their wedding pictures in February 2026. They recently graced their appearances together on Koffee With Karan Season 9, where they opened up about their relationship, marriage and the story behind their proposal.

During the conversation with host Karan Johar, Vijay revealed why he had asked Rashmika to bring up marriage 100 times before they took the next step. The actor explained that he wanted to be certain about their decision rather than rush into marriage in a moment of emotion.

Why did Vijay Deverakonda ask Rashmika to ask him 100 times about marriage?

Karan Johar asked Vijay whether he had proposed to Rashmika after she came into his life. Rashmika then recalled how she first brought up marriage while the two were sitting at an airport. She told Vijay that they should get married, but his response was unexpected. He asked her to bring it up 100 times.




Surprised by the revelation, Karan asked Rashmika whether she had actually followed his request.

The actor confirmed that she had continued asking him about marriage for an entire year.

Vijay explained that he did not want their decision to be driven by a sudden rush of affection. He said, "If you look at my past interviews, I always talked about love with disrespect and disbelief. Like, I don’t believe in this concept, which was immature of me… And I was also very clouded by my ambition. For many years, for me, if something was not serving the purpose of career, money and growth, it felt like you were distracting me from my purpose, and I needed to cut it off.”

Vijay says Rashmika's presence changed his outlook on love

Vijay said his feelings for Rashmika developed gradually through their everyday experiences together. “I was like, I need her around because my day feels better. My meals feel better when we are sharing them. I sleep incredibly well when she is with me. Then I realised I want to be married to this woman, I want to be with her,” he futher added.


The actor clarified that asking Rashmika to bring up marriage repeatedly was not an attempt to hurt her. Instead, he wanted to test his own feelings and understand whether their relationship could withstand the challenges that come with a long-term commitment.

He recalled feeling guilty when Rashmika once asked him whether he was testing her. Vijay said he was actually trying to understand himself and their relationship, rather than deliberately putting her through a difficult experience.

Rashmika, meanwhile, said she understood his reasons and did not doubt his intentions. Vijay also spoke about being a sensitive person who had experienced emotional hurt in the past.

Why Vijay proposed to Rashmika twice before their wedding

Vijay also revealed that he wanted Rashmika to have a proposal story to remember, even though romantic gestures did not come naturally to him.

He had planned to propose during their December trip to Italy, before their February wedding, but could not find a ring that felt right.

Rather than abandon the idea, he decided to propose during their wedding celebrations in Udaipur. He recalled, "I proposed to her on the first day of our wedding in Udaipur which was the sangeet night. After the sangeet I asked all my friends to come and I wanted to be around our friends where I went down on one knee and proposed to her. I didn't want to take that moment away from her.”

The couple also cleared up speculation about a ring Vijay had given Rashmika before their wedding, explaining that it was not her engagement ring. They revealed their actual rings during the show.

For the unversed, Vijay and Rashmika first worked together in the Telugu film Geetha Govindam in 2018 and reunited for Dear Comrade in 2019. Their on-screen chemistry led to years of speculation about their relationship, which they largely kept private.

The couple married on February 26, 2026, in Udaipur.
