The film’s theatrical run was further affected by unexpected circumstances in the Tamil film industry. With Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan failing to release as scheduled, Vaa Vaathiyaar took advantage of the open Pongal window and hit screens in Tamil on January 14, 2026.
However, even with reduced competition, the movie did not translate festive expectations into box office success. This has now paved the way for a much quicker transition to digital platforms, something rarely seen for a star-led Pongal release.
Vaa Vaathiyar OTT release date
In the second phase of its release journey, Vaa Vaathiyaar is all set to make its OTT debut. Prime Video has officially announced the global streaming premiere of the film. The movie will begin streaming from January 28, making it available to audiences in India as well as in over 240 countries and territories worldwide. Viewers can watch the film in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada. Produced by K.E. Gnanavel Raja under the Studio Green banner, Vaa Vaathiyaar is described by Prime Video as a lively adventure-comedy that blends humour, emotion, and nostalgia. Sundar, Ramesh Thilak, Vadivukkarasi, Nizhalgal Ravi, and Thenappan P.L. This forces Ramu, played by Karthi, to step up, confront responsibility, and undergo a personal transformation. What has surprised many is how quickly the film has moved to OTT, just two weeks after its Pongal release.
Such a rapid digital premiere is uncommon for films led by major stars. Whether Vaa Vaathiyaar finds a warmer reception among OTT viewers remains to be seen, but its digital release gives the film a fresh chance to connect with audiences who may have missed it in theatres.
