Julie Cochrane will host a workshop on February 25, at the Willingdon Club in Mahalaxmi.
Mental health problems have been on the rise in India. As more people open up on the subject and seek treatment, one particular category of therapy, ISTDP, is gaining traction.
The workshop is co-organised by The Purple Center led by Dr Darshan Shah, a respected psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who is among the leading proponents in India for ISTDP. The workshop will be beneficial for mental health professionals, students, suicide help line workers, hypnotherapists, care givers and to anyone interested in knowing or healing the complex world of mental health.
ISTDP is an accelerated form of psychodynamic therapy, through conversations with a patient, designed to provide rapid access to the patient’s unconscious. It thus increases the chances of faster relief from anxiety, depression and character disorders.
The method was developed through empirical, video-recorded research by Habib Davanloo, the Iranian psychoanalyst and psychiatric researcher who was Professor of Psychiatry at McGill University, Montreal. ISTDP’s primary goal is to help the patient overcome internal conflicts and experience their true feelings about the present and past that have been bottled up.
The technique is intensive in that it aims to help the patient experience these warded-off feelings to the maximum degree possible. It is short-term in that it tries to achieve this experience as quickly as possible. It is dynamic because it involves working with unconscious forces and transference feelings. ISTDP is more active and focussed than traditional psychodynamic psychotherapy. It aims to provide not only symptom relief but also personality restructuring.
