Natasha Malpani Oswal, founder of Boundless Media and daughter-in-law of businessman Motilal Oswal (married to Pratik Oswal), has studied and lived abroad for nearly 10 years. But it wasn’t a course or a mentor that helped her discover what she wanted to do. It was the feeling of loneliness.
“Loneliness is some thing that people don’t talk about,” says Oswal. “Going abroad is glamourised a lot but leaving is hard, given our community-based upbringing. So, when you do go abroad, it can get lonely.”
Oswal adds that we all need to learn that it’s okay to feel that way. Filling up her calendar with coffees and dinners when she was living solo in London, Oswal says getting comfortable alone made her realise the importance of mental health.
“Today, even corporates are taking mental health seriously. There are a lot of in-house facilities that companies are running. But I think we need to do more on the personal and family front because people are not as comfortable seeking help for those issues.”
Whether work or personal, getting in touch with the inner workings of yourself will help you achieve more, says Oswal. “EQ is more important than IQ. In fact, I think IQ is overrated. In the workplace, you need to be a certain level of smart but after that, your smartness can get in the way because you may tend to overanalyse and overthink things. Life is simpler than you think. That’s the point of mental health — you need to pay attention to it on a regular basis. EQ is about understanding your own thoughts and feelings and then being able to read other people.”
