Two people may earn the same salary for 20 years and still end up with different levels of wealth. The reason is not how much they earn, but how they manage their finances like saving and investing. CA Nitin Kaushik recently shared a post in which he highlighted why high income cannot gurantee financial security. Takign to X, he shared how building assets, understanding debt and maintaining discipline with money can turn your normal earnings into wealth.

High salary does not guarantee wealth

Your "wealth is not your salary", pointed out the CA in his post. Good income can support a comfortable lifestyle, but creating wealth that lasts comes from discipline, which requires one to put some of the money into assets that appreciate, retain value or generate income. He explained that your salary will pay for today's expenses, but creating wealth and accumulating assets will pay for your future.

Earning money and managing it is not same, infact, it requires different skills. Without financial knowledge, you may end up making poor investment choices, take expensive loans or underestimate risks. Before committing large sum of money, you need to have an understanding of compounding, inflation, taxation and debt.

CA Nitin Kaushik explains why financial discipline matters

CA Nitin Kaushik advises against uncontrolled increase of your lifestyle expenses with the rise in your income. And instead he encourages everyone to think about whether they are investing their money before they are upgrading their lifestyle, know what they are buying and can keep their cool when it falls.

He also pointed out that not all borrowing is good. It’s reasonable to borrow for a business or income-producing asset when the potential returns can justify the risk and cost. He warns against borrowing more than you can afford, as it can put you in a financial risk.

Even a loan taken for an investment is not automatically good debt, he warned, because returns are uncertain while repayments remain due.

Savings, investments and cash flow serve different purposes

According to Kaushik, financial security requires a balance between savings, investments and cash flow.

Savings is liquid money for emergencies, investments are to build wealth. In contrast, income generating assets can generate cash flow. Without an emergency fund, chasing passive income can leave people vulnerable when unexpected expenses come up.

His advice? Investors should also know how much they can afford to lose, their liquidity needs and investment timeframes before putting in money. Diversifying and not borrowing heavily for uncertain returns can also help reduce the risk of lasting financial damage.

3 Questions to Ask Yourself

Look beyond your monthly earnings, ask yourself three questions: how much income do you keep, what assets are you building and will your finances survive a sudden loss of income, advised Kaushik.
