Sunil Chhetri likes to keep fewer things in his office.
Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri says his office den is a space for conversation and contemplation, and snacking is prohibited:

A special room
“My favourite part of my house [in Bengaluru’s Lavelle Road] is the office den. It’s where I like to think and get away from everything else. I’ve started reading a lot more than I used to. That has made it easier for me to find tranquillity in my office.”

A room for awards
“I try to keep things as minimal as possible. I have a study table and a couple of shelves for my trophies. It’s funny, because when I moved here, my mother told me that I’d better continue winning because she wasn’t going to let me bring any of my trophies or medals from Delhi.”

Room for reflection
“My den also serves as my study. It’s where I do most of my research. I don’t think it reflects any of my pet peeves as such, but the office reflects my need for an escape. And though my house is right in the middle of the city, it’s a quiet and peaceful neighbourhood, which really helps.”

No food please
“I would never allow food or drinks in my den. You won’t ever see anyone having a snack in my office.”

Sign on the door
“It would be ‘Calma’, which means ‘keep calm’ in Spanish. I think it’s important to be calm because only then can you really enjoy the peace and quiet that my office has to offer.”

Posters and photographs

“I’m not one for posters, but if I had to have one, it would be a really big picture of a tiger’s face. It’s an animal I adore. I’ve been fortunate enough to see them a couple of times in my life, and those are moments that I’ll never forget.

“I’ve also had many great memories on the field. If I were to frame a few pictures, it would be of those teams I’ve been part of and trophies I’ve been fortunate to lift.”

Word to describe it
“I’d say it’s ‘peaceful’. Because when I’m in that room, I’m able to block everything out and just be myself. It’s where I find the tranquillity and solitude.”.

Friends and guests
“My teammates often come home, and though we spend most of our time in the living room, some of them like to spend time in the den as well. A lot of them actually come to the room to make phone calls, because it’s the quietest part of the house. If I could invite anyone, it would probably be the Brazilian striker Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. I’m sure they would make for some interesting conversation.”

“The larger than life television screen is something I just love. We watch live games here, and they play PS4 too. We watch a lot of the earlier games on this big screen. The jerseys here (see pic below) get rotated as we try to mix up the memorabilia. Every time you come here, there’s something new to see. My favourite is the Stephen Curry jersey — the first time he became an all-star.” — Yannick Colaco, Managing Director

“I used to be the national coach of India and visited many of the countries whose flags you see up here. I feel, this gives the space a slight international feel. NBA is going global. My favourites include Mizoram and Iran. I like this area because it’s private, but you still have access to everyone – so you can quickly pop out if you hear something you like. The smaller conference room is also a great place to have a quick meeting.” — Scott Flemming, Head of Basketball Operations

“We call it the bar. It has got a very light air and we usually use this space when we need to brainstorm. It doesn’t feel as formal as a conference room. Often I just bring my laptop here when I have to discuss something with a coworker as this space is neutral. It’s the informal space in this formal setting. We also have breakfast and lunch at the bar.” — Mairu Gupta, Sr Director, Content & Media Distribution
