TN govt absolves Nayanthara & husband of surrogacy violation allegations, blames hospital staff for negligence
The couple adhered to all the surrogacy protocols prescribed by the government, claims report.

Actress Nayanthara and her director-husband Vignesh Sivan, who has been embroiled in a surrogacy row with the Tamil Nadu government, have finally been given a clean chit. On Wednesday, the TN health government announced that the couple has not violated any surrogacy laws in India.
The Directorate of Medical Rural Health Services has issued a notice to the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) centre of a private hospital in Chennai for its inability to maintain any medical record on the treatment provided to the couple and the health conditions of the surrogate mother. "The hospital has been asked to explain why the ART licence should not be cancelled for this violation," a release said. The name of the hospital has not been disclosed yet.
The TN government appointed a three-member team to inquire if there were any legal discrepancies in the surrogacy process undertaken by the power couple. Upon investigations, the team found that the couple registered their marriage on March 11, 2016. The documents were verified and found to be valid. The duo's family physician had recommended surrogacy, following which they consulted the doctors. However, the team has not been able to contact the family doctor as he is currently residing out of India.
The report noted that the hospital harvested the oocytes and preserved the embryo, as per ICMR guidelines. The same year in November, a contract was signed with a surrogate. The woman met the age requirement prescribed by the Centre. She was married and had one child fulfilling the legal mandate for surrogacy in India. "While it is now mandatory as per the ART Act to have only relatives as surrogates, the earlier guidelines permitted the couple to hire a woman for the service. There was no violation in the protocol," read the statement released by the TN health government.
According to reports, the hospital staff was given the responsibility of looking after the woman during the pregnancy. She underwent a C-section surgery, and the twins - Uyir and Ulagham - met their parents on October 9.
Nayanthara and Vignesh tied the knot in June at a private ceremony. Their wedding was attended by industry veterans like Rajinikanth, Shah Rukh Khan, A.R Rahman, Vijay Sethupathi, etc.
