Grind chia seeds before eating them
If whole chia seeds do not appeal to you, Dr Pal suggests giving them a quick grind before adding them to your food. According to the gastro doctor, grinding the seeds does not remove their fibre. Instead, it can break open the seeds' tough outer layer, potentially making some of the nutrients inside more accessible to the body. Dr Pal also explained that ground chia seeds can absorb water more evenly. This may allow gut bacteria to reach the fibre more easily.Another reason to try grinding is texture. Whole chia seeds develop their familiar jelly-like coating when exposed to liquid. Dr Pal said grinding them prevents the seeds from forming that same jelly-like structure, which could make them more appealing to people who dislike the consistency. He also pointed to the nutrients chia seeds provide, including omega-3 fats, protein and antioxidants.
Swap plain water for a more flavourful option
Soaking chia seeds does not have to mean leaving them in a glass of plain water. Dr Pal's second suggestion is to use something more flavourful instead. He recommends options such as almond milk, coconut water or curd. Besides making the snack more enjoyable, these ingredients can bring additional nutrients to the mix.According to Dr Pal, using curd can add protein, calcium and probiotics, potentially making the chia snack more filling and appealing as part of a gut-friendly diet. The idea is simple: instead of forcing yourself to drink or eat soaked chia seeds in a form you dislike, pair them with something you already enjoy.
Don't like the texture? Blend chia seeds into a smoothie
There is another easy workaround for people who cannot get past the gel-like consistency. Dr Pal suggests soaking the chia seeds and then blending them into a smoothie. Once blended with fruits, vegetables, milk or another smoothie base, the texture becomes far less noticeable. As Dr Pal explained, you may barely notice the chia seeds are there while still getting their fibre, omega-3 fats and other nutrients. This can also make chia seeds easier to incorporate into an existing breakfast routine. Instead of preparing a separate chia snack, you can simply add the soaked seeds to a smoothie and blend everything together.
How to add chia seeds to your diet?
Chia seeds are easy to add to everyday foods without changing your meals too much. For breakfast, sprinkle them over oatmeal, porridge, yoghurt, smoothie bowls and cereal. You can also blend soaked chia seeds into fruit smoothies or milkshakes. They work well in overnight oats, where they naturally thicken the mixture. For a savoury option, add a small amount to salad dressings, soups or homemade dips. Chia seeds can also be mixed into pancake, muffin or dosa batter. For a quick snack, stir them into curd with chopped fruits and nuts for added texture and nutrition.
