Actress Tara Sutaria has spoken about a personal challenge that affects an important part of everyday life — dealing with numbers. While discussing financial literacy and the need for women to understand their money, the Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups actress revealed that she lives with dyscalculia, a learning disability that makes number-based tasks difficult for her. She also opened up about the support she receives from her family and professional team.

Tara Sutaria reveals her dyscalculia diagnosis

Tara made the revelation while speaking to Hautterfly about financial literacy and managing money. The actress explained that she tries to stay involved in her financial decisions but sometimes struggles because of her learning disability.

According to Tara, her father plays an important role in helping her handle her finances. She also relies on her accounts team to take care of financial paperwork and other number-heavy responsibilities.





Tara said, "I am lucky because my dad helps me with my finances. It is very important to know everything about your bank work, your paperwork, how to really take care of your finances as a woman. I try and understand as much as I can, but I have a learning disability—a Maths learning disability. It is called dyscalculia. I try but more often than not I make a mistake. I need my team. My accounts team looks into everything.”

The actress explained that she makes an effort to understand these matters herself but can make mistakes because of dyscalculia.

For Tara, the solution has been a combination of learning, asking questions and relying on people she trusts when professional financial matters become difficult to handle.

What is dyscalculia? Understanding the learning disability

Dyscalculia is a specific learning disorder that can affect a person's ability to understand, learn and work with numbers and mathematical concepts. It can make certain everyday tasks involving numbers more challenging.

The condition can vary from person to person. Someone with dyscalculia may have difficulty with calculations, understanding numerical information, remembering number sequences or dealing with certain practical tasks involving numbers.

Dyscalculia is sometimes informally referred to as “math dyslexia”, but the two conditions are not the same. Dyslexia primarily affects reading and language-related skills, while dyscalculia is associated with difficulties involving mathematics and numerical information.

Tara's remarks also show that having dyscalculia does not mean a person cannot make financial decisions or learn about money. With appropriate support and strategies, people can find ways to manage areas that they may find challenging.

In Tara's case, her father and professional accounts team form an important part of that support system. At the same time, she continues to educate herself about her finances rather than leaving every decision to someone else.

Tara Sutaria talks about investments and real estate

Despite her difficulties with numbers, Tara revealed that she has a diverse investment portfolio and is continuing to learn about managing her money.

The actress said she often discusses investments with friends who have a better understanding of financial matters. These conversations help her learn as she builds her knowledge and makes decisions about where she wants to invest.

Real estate appears to be one area that particularly interests her. Tara said she loves homes and enjoys investing in them, making property an important part of her financial interests.

The film has brought Tara back into the spotlight and it was released in theatres on August 26.
