Stranger Things fans assemble as the makers have officially announced a new live-action spinoff series. After months of speculation, the makers have now put a full stop to it. Co-created by Kate Trefry and the Duffer Brothers, Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure is being directed by Joe Wright. Set in the 1950s, the prequel takes place before the events of Stranger Things and the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming series.

Streaming details of Other Worlds: Stranger Things

Netflix has confirmed that Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure will premiere in 2028. However, the streaming platform is yet to announce an exact release date. The series will be available to watch on Netflix.

The upcoming show has been in development for several years. Matt and Ross Duffer revealed that they had been thinking about the project since 2022, around the time the fourth season of Stranger Things arrived. The brothers said they were excited to bring a new story to the screen, with a different setting, characters and villains.

What is the plot of Other Worlds? How is it connected to Stranger Things?

Unlike the original series, which follows a group of friends in Hawkins, Indiana, Other Worlds will take viewers to the 1950s. The first teaser offers a glimpse of its setting, revealing the date April 19, 1955, and the location as Marion, Nevada. It shows an abandoned bicycle near a restricted area, with an unusual disturbance in the sky that resembles a wormhole.

The series is also connected to Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the stage play that explores Henry Creel's past in Hawkins in 1959. In an earlier interview with Variety, Matt Duffer revealed that the spin-off would explain the mysterious rock that young Henry finds inside a scientist's briefcase in the Nevada caves. The object was first introduced in the stage play and later appeared in Season 5 of Stranger Things.

However, the creators have made it clear that the new show will tell a different story, with a fresh set of characters and mythology, while retaining the horror and mystery associated with the original series.

Who is making the new Stranger Things series?

Kate Trefry, who also wrote The First Shadow, will serve as the co-creator, writer and showrunner. Joe Wright, known for films such as Pride & Prejudice, Atonement and Darkest Hour, will direct the first three episodes. Production is scheduled to take place in New Mexico.

Matt and Ross Duffer will executive produce through Upside Down Pictures, alongside Shawn Levy and his production company 21 Laps. Other executive producers include Paul Dichter, Shelley Meals, Andrea Sperling and Pavlina Hatoupis.

Netflix has not announced the cast or episode count yet.
