What is the Conformity Gate theory?

The viral video has also brought back the Conformity Gate theory among Stranger Things fans. The series concluded in January 2026, but some viewers have continued to believe that the finale was not the real ending.

According to this fan theory, the events shown in the final episode were supposedly an illusion created by the show's villain, Vecna. Fans believe that Netflix could still release a secret ninth episode of Season 5, revealing what actually happened.

The speculation has gained attention following HBO's surprise Halloween episode of IT: Welcome to Derry. This has made some viewers wonder whether Netflix could also announce an unexpected episode of one of its most popular shows. However, neither Netflix nor the show's creators have confirmed any such plans.

Ross Duffer's Stranger Things Day tease adds to speculation

Adding to this, co-creator Ross Duffer recently shared a cryptic meme on his Instagram Stories ahead of Stranger Things Day, which falls on November 6.

The meme featured stills from Nathan Fielder's You Can See Everything. One image carried the message, "I know what's coming on Stranger Things Day," while the next read, "No you don't."

The post left fans guessing about what the creators might have planned for the occasion. Some believe it could be an announcement related to the franchise, while others think it may simply be a playful tease.

What is next for the Stranger Things franchise?

Even though a ninth episode remains unconfirmed, the Stranger Things universe is far from over. Netflix is developing a live-action spin-off, while the Broadway play Stranger Things: The First Shadow is also expected to get a filmed version for the streaming platform.

For now, fans will have to wait for an official announcement to find out what Finn Wolfhard and Caleb McLaughlin were filming.
