Sporting Sunday: Twitter flooded with emotions over Wimbledon, CWC; Pichai, Chhetri​, B-town tweet

In what turned out to be one of the most stressful days in sports, with the Wimbledon men's singles finals and cricket World Cup taking place side by side, records were created in both the games as nail-biting fans the world over remained glued to screens on Sunday.

At Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic became the first man in 71 years to win the title after facing match points in the final, coming back to beat Roger Federer in an unprecedented fifth-set tiebreaker. At 4 hours and 57 minutes, it was the longest Wimbledon final and settled by a final set tiebreak for the first time.

Meanwhile at Lord's, England and New Zealand played the first Super Over in cricket World Cup history, after the two teams were tied at 241 runs at the end of 50 overs. The six-ball shootout also ended in a tie, with both sides hitting 15 runs; but England went on to lift the trophy after a 44-year wait, by virtue of a superior boundary count in the match.


As things got tense on the court and pitch, Twitterati too seemed to go into an overdrive. Even the official handles of the sports tweeted at each other, with Wimbledon asking the International Cricket Council (ICC), "How are you coping your end?" . And the latter replying, 'a bit hectic.'


Google boss Sundar Pichai, known to be an avid cricket fan, wrote on the microblogging site, "Tiebreak #WimbledonFinal and superover #CricketWorldCupFinal , can't script this!!"


Indian politicians, too, tweeted about the 'unbelievable day for sports' and the sportsman spirit displayed. Former Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan said he had 'no words to describe the euphoria'.


BJP National Spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia spent the Sunday watching the CWC match on TV and the Wimbledon final on his iPad.


Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also took to Twitter to laud the sportsmanship and congratulate the winners.



The sports world was not behind in sharing their emotions on social media. Footballer Sunil Chhetri, who said he stayed up past his bedtime to watch all the action, said, "What an incredible few hours of sport!."


Former cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi wrote, 'No one lost at Lord’s & at Wimbledon...Only cricket & tennis won'.


Danish golfer Thomas Bjorn also commented on the various international sporting events taking place simultaneously.


Bollywood, too, flooded Twitter with messages on what were a gripping few hours. Actor Riteish Deshmukh called it the greatest sporting day ever.



Director Anurag Kashyap, who displayed his disappointment over England winning by the virtue of more boundaries, called it the greatest day in sport, adding that 'film-making is nothing compared to playing the game'.
