A new year often means a new wardrobe. But before you overhaul your closet and throw everything out, take inspiration from these designers who are making minor style shifts to their wardrobe this year.

Falguni Peacock, Kunal Rawal, Nikhil Mehra and Arjun Khanna reveal their personal style resolutions for 2020 and the one closet tweak they hope to make this year.

Closet Cull
On the business front, Peacock hopes to introduce and use a lot of colours in 2020 to ‘make the outfits more fun and infuse some elements of romance’.

“Personally, I will incorporate more classics in my wardrobe and my style,” said Falguni Peacock of couture design label Falguni Shane Peacock. “I'm going to do a spring clean of my wardrobe and give away all the clothes that I haven't worn or seen in the last year. I will also wear more dresses than jeans and team them up with sneakers than heels.”

On the business front, Peacock hopes to introduce and use a lot of colours in 2020 to ‘make the outfits more fun and infuse some elements of romance’. The label, known for its edgy, intricately detailed western cuts with Indian embellishments, bright pops of colour and signature use of feathers and sequin embroidery, recently opened a new flagship store in Kala Ghoda.

‘Dressing to please myself’
Rawal wishes men were more involved in their choice of clothing and they enjoyed what they were wearing.

“My style resolution for 2020 is most definitely to use more colour,” said menswear designer Kunal Rawal, known for multi-functional approach to menswear. “I have always been more experimental. I like to dress for myself and for the occasion. It is something I enjoy doing and will continue doing this year as well - dressing to please myself.”

Rawal wishes men were more involved in their choice of clothing and they enjoyed what they were wearing. One trend that the designer is super into right now is headgear. “Headgears are often considered for a warmer look, but honestly, there’s a right headgear for each season, and I’m planning to play around and do more hats this season.”

“When it comes to a personal closet tweak, one change I’m doing this year is I’d like to play more with tailored fits.”

Classic with a Twist
Mehra’s personal closet is a mix of contemporary and sartorial styles but in 2020, the designer hopes to ‘make it edgy by introducing more spunk and quirk’ to his wardrobe.

Designer Nikhil Mehra, of Delhi-based brand Shantanu & Nikhil, hopes to follow an anti-trend approach where classic styles are mixed with intellectual design aesthetics.

“I really connect with the ideology of sports meeting formal-wear, for example an Indian bandhgala paired with jeans would be my personal style simply because it’s a classic look with a subtle twist,” Mehra told ET Panache.

Wardrobe Reset
When it comes to his closet, the only tweak Khanna would change is the actual closet itself.

“I think my style resolution for 2020 is going to be easy, individual and unique. Definitely lots of vintage and loads of denim. The denim on denim look is my personal favourite,” said menswear designer Arjun Khanna.

When it comes to his closet, the only tweak Khanna would change is the actual closet itself. “I need everything to be visible so loads of hanging space and more shelves along with a sufficient amount of drawers. I’d love to glance through my collection of outfits and get inspired differently every time I look at them,” he told ET Panache.

Say what you must about his diet, but the evolution of Jack Dorsey’s footwear style is fascinating. From loafers to statement sneakers to thong sandals, the Twitter CEO knows a thing or two about shoes. In 2017, the Internet went into a frenzy when Dorsey was spotted wearing thong-style sandals for a talk with former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein. Since then, the sandals have become a part of Dorsey’s wardrobe.

Most recently, he sported the Earth Runner sandals at the Square Crypto inaugural off-site. Starting at $69, the sandals are said to combine the barefoot benefits of earthing shoes (shoes that offer the primal experience of living grounded to the earth) with the functionality of minimalist running sandals.

Unlike the rest of Silicon Valley, Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom’s wardrobe eschews the typical hoodie. The tech entrepreneur is more comfortable in sports coats and ties. “I’m probably the only guy in Silicon Valley who enjoys wearing a jacket or a tie and does it unironically,” he has said earlier.

“My jacket of choice is a Boglioli unstructured jacket. It almost looks like a sweater. I can wear it to anything in Silicon Valley and I don’t look like a stiff or a banker.”

For a formal event, Systrom loves wearing Brioni suits for “that old Italian style”.
