Sometimes God gives the hardest battles to someone who doubts their own strength so that they can emerge victorious than ever before. Such is the story of 26-year-old Archana Patil, whose life was marked by multiple obstacles, but she pushed through the challenges like a true warrior, becoming a living reminder that even the most unlikely journeys can rewrite their own destiny. Born to extreme poverty, Archana’s life began in a house where she and her family used to go to sleep on an empty stomach most days.

From house help to graduate

In a post shared by the Humans of Bombay on Instagram, Archana Patil, who is currently pursuing her second year in B.Com, revealed that while her mother was blind, her father was an alcoholic, and she was the sole breadwinner of the family. For over a decade, Archana worked as a house help around the clock, just to feed her family and ensure that her two brothers could attend school.

Despite knowing the value of education, Archana Patil found solace in the thought that at least his brother could study and get a better life for themselves. But tragedy struck again when she lost one of her brothers to a brain tumor in 2020. Gripped by grief, Archana was depressed for days, thinking she was a failure for not being able to protect her sibling. But his brother’s final words, ‘I want to see you happy, I know you will fulfill your dreams’, helped her to overcome the sorrow and become something in life.

Turning grief into growth

With the newfound motivation, Archana Patil took up studying at an age when people usually graduate. She started learning the English alphabet, held a pen for the first time and would stay up all night copying words from children’s storybooks to practice her handwriting. Archana’s dedication and effort bore fruit when she passed her 10th standard examination through NIOS with 65%, followed by clearing her 12th standard examination, and finally pursuing B.Com.

A few months ago, Archana Patil landed a job in an international airline as ground staff. With her salary and savings, she bought her own home in Mumbai, making a space for herself and her family. While her mother is proud of her daughter, Archana doesn’t want to stop following her dreams. She wishes to work in a ‘great office’ and take her parents on an international trip. Archana admitted that her goals might take time, but at the moment, she cannot be anything but happy for achieving so much in her life, even if it took every ounce of her blood, sweat, and courage.
