Some of the reports coming in indicate that that the Xbox Series S will have a slightly underclocked CPU.
A second generation Xbox has been in the works for some time now, and a leaked Microsoft document points to a release date in August. This will come on the back of Sony announcing the PlayStation 5 on June 11.
According to the tipster Eurogamer, Microsoft had originally planned to launch the gaming console, codenamed ‘Lockhart,’ in June, in an effort to lure potential buyers of the newly-launched PS5. The release date for the new Xbox has now reportedly been moved to August, and Eurogamer reckons that it will be named the Xbox Series S.
The company has been working at a more advanced and cheaper version of the current Xbox for months now. Its Xbox Series X developer kit, codenamed “Dante,” lets game developers use a special ‘Lockhart’ mode to test how they’d perform on the new console.
Some of the reports coming in indicate that that the Xbox Series S will have a slightly underclocked CPU, but documents accessed by The Verge indicate that ‘Lockhart’ will have the same CPU clock speed as the Xbox Series X. The new console will reportedly have 7.5GB of usable RAM, paired with 4 teraflops of GPU performance.
The Xbox Series X has 13.5GB of usable RAM and 12 teraflops of GPU performance. Microsoft could take the wraps off the Xbox Series X in August when it announces the pricing for the more performance-oriented Xbox Series X. The Series S seems to have been built keeping in mind price-conscious gamers with 1080p and 1440pp monitors.
There is also the likelihood that the price of the Xbox Series S may be linked to the Xbox All Access Subscription. The pricing for the subscription plan costs $19.99 for an Xbox One S All Digital Edition. Concurrently, Microsoft plans to bundle its Project xCloud streaming technology with the Xbox Game Pass later this year, so a subscription Xbox Series S console could attract interest from those unwilling to fork out more for the powerful Xbox Series X.
