Say NO to gym if...: 6 reasons when working out can do more harm than good to the body, warns fitness expert
Fitness coach James Webster shared guidance on recognising the physical signs that influence how your body responds to training. He explained that certain conditions can affect energy levels, recovery and overall performance, and highlighted why p...

His recent Instagram post breaks down the signs that your body needs rest instead of more strain.
1. When You’re Sick
Webster explained that training while sick—whether it’s a flu, fever or infection—forces your body to divide its energy between recovery and exercise. This slows down healing. He follows a simple guideline: symptoms above the neck may allow light movement, but anything below the neck, like chest congestion or fever, requires full rest.2. When You’re Fasting All Day
Attempting to train on an empty stomach leads to weak performance and increases injury risk. Webster said workouts done without proper fuel rarely feel productive. He advised eating a balanced meal with protein and carbohydrates before exercising to support energy levels and make sessions safer.3. When You Haven’t Slept Enough
A night without sleep affects coordination, focus and strength. The coach noted that sleep deprivation makes training unsafe and less effective. Instead of forcing a workout after an all-nighter, he suggested allowing the body to recover properly.4. When Pain Goes Beyond Normal Soreness
Mild soreness is normal, but sharp or unusual pain is a clear warning sign. Webster said stabbing or joint-related pain should never be pushed through. If someone still wants to stay active, he recommended gentler options like stretching, walking or switching movements that don’t trigger the discomfort.5. After Donating Blood
Blood donation temporarily reduces energy levels, and Webster advised keeping workouts light afterward. High-intensity exercises should be avoided for the day as the body needs time to stabilise following donation.6. When You’re Overtrained
Working out too often without enough recovery can backfire. Webster listed signs such as constant fatigue, weaker performance, mood changes, low appetite and poor recovery. He said these symptoms show the body is not just asking for rest—it urgently needs it.The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
