Katrina Kaif was subjected to a lot of fat-shaming over her weight gain
Katrina Kaif was recently a victim of rather vicious trolling about her postpartum weight. Many celebrities, such as Salman Khan, Sameera Reddy, have come out in defence of the Namaste London star, calling out the severe body shaming she has suffered since her videos at the Ambani family’s Ganesh Chaturthi gala went viral. Recently celebrity nutritionist Ryan Fernando explained how women gain weight after delivering a child and why new mothers should not be shamed over weight gain. Ryan called out trolls who compared her post-pregnancy weight with her earlier svelte figure and explained that he had worked with several celebrities on their diets closely and stated that most people see only the glamour and neglect to know the person behind the persona. “Like all of us, they too have families, bad days..." he said. He then went on to explain the mechanics of postpartum weight gain.

Why Do Women Gain Weight After Pregnancy?

He explained that women putting on weight after pregnancy is basic biology. During pregnancy, a woman’s blood volume increases more than 50 per cent. The uterus also expands, and it takes at least six to twelve weeks for it to go back to its original shape. New mothers also have to consume more calories than normal (400-500 extra calories) so that their bodies can create milk for the infant.

A lot of women also experience issues such as postpartum depression and postpartum thyroiditis. They also experience iron deficiency, due to which they suffer poor sleep. He then explained that rather than lambasting the postpartum phase as women getting lazy, we should consider it as a recovery phase. New mothers need time to recover and require support from others, or at least freedom from judgement if they cannot obtain support.

He also explained that such inflammatory comments have permanent effects outside of affecting a specific celebrity’s mental well-being. They also do a number on the mental health of young mothers, who subject themselves to quick weight loss hacks which may damage their health, causing stress, hair loss and myriad other health problems. “Trolling doesn’t just hurt feelings; it also causes poor health decisions,” he warned. He also concluded that when trolls show their true colours by poking fun at someone’s weight and looks, it says very little about the individual they are targeting but tells a lot about the anonymous troll’s upbringing.

Katrina and Vicky were part of a group of Bollywood stars who joined the Ambani family for their Ganesh Chaturthi event at their home in Mumbai, which is called Antilia, on September 14.

The couple's look caught a lot of attention because Katrina has been staying out of the spotlight at public events lately. She and Vicky had their first baby in November of last year.
