What began as a routine family meal quickly became a lesson in how differently food is priced across countries. Standing inside a bustling vegetarian restaurant, the child’s reaction to the final bill captured both shock and joy, highlighting why everyday Indian experiences often feel extraordinary to visitors from abroad.

During a visit to Chennai, a young boy from New Zealand found himself stunned by something most locals barely pause to notice: the total on a restaurant bill. The video shows him standing inside Geetham Veg, a popular vegetarian eatery, staring at the receipt with visible excitement. The final amount came to just Rs 1,502, roughly 30 New Zealand dollars, a figure he clearly struggled to believe.

What caught his attention wasn’t just the low price, but what it included. The bill covered 7 different dishes, not one or two items. As he repeatedly looked at the receipt, his expression shifted between disbelief and delight. He explained that in New Zealand, ordering even a handful of dishes could cost far more.


In the Instagram clip, the boy excitedly breaks down the bill for his mother, pointing out that the meal at Geetham Veg cost just 30 dollars. He lists everything they ordered — Baby Corn Manchurian, bonda, dahi papdi, a mini Geetham special falooda, idli, paneer masala dosa, and medium veg noodles — and stresses that it added up to seven full dishes. He then compares it to New Zealand, explaining that back home, just two or three items could easily cost around 200 dollars, while here it was only 30. As he compares the prices, he adds that a similar order back home could easily touch 200 New Zealand dollars, roughly Rs 10,000.

Reacting calmly to her son’s excitement, the mother offers a simple explanation that sums it all up. “What to do, this is India," she says, as the boy continues to marvel at the bill. The video, shared on Instagram, struck a chord online and was posted with the caption, “Today’s lesson for my NRI kid: Indian food = happiness, bill = surprise happiness."
