'RRR' at Oscars: Rajamouli's magnum opus makes a bid for Academy Awards in general category

Rajamouli’s period drama ‘RRR’ is in the news again. The makers of the pre-Indian Independence fiction are determined to make it to the Oscars come what may. Refusing to be bogged down by their failure to be India’s official entry to the 95th Academy Awards (‘RRR’ lost out to the Gujarati film ‘Chhello Show') the makers of the film have decided to compete for the Academy Awards, this time in the general category.

The makers took to Twitter to announce the news to the ‘RRR’ fandom, through a heartfelt note. "We applied to The Academy of Oscars consideration in the general category. We wish our RRR family the best and thank them from the bottom of our hearts for making this possible. Here is to continue to win hearts and entertain audiences worldwide," said the post.

“We are honoured that RRR's overwhelming success represented Indian Cinema on the global stage by creating milestones at the worldwide box-office and uniting film buffs across the world by transcending linguistic and cultural barriers."We're grateful to each and every one who loved our film and cheered us over the past few months. You made this journey possible," it added.

As soon as the news was announced on the microblogging site, well-wishes started to pour in. Courtney Howard, a noted film critic said in a tweet, “ #RRRmovie's RRRoad to the OscarRRRs being paved as we speak. (sic) You've never seen anything like this movie/ adrenaline rush. I sincerely hope Academy members get out there and see this one."
The period drama will also be competing in 14 categories at the 95th Academy Awards. These include Best Motion Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Visual Effects, Best Original Song, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Editing, Best Makeup, and Hairstyling.

Directed by S.S Rajamouli (of ‘Bahubali’ fame) this Ram Charan and Jr. NTR starrer is considered one of the most successful films of this decade. The Telegu epic action drama is said to have minted about Rs 1150 crore at the box-office.
