A bicycle float to create awareness about endangered species has been made, which is also the theme of Earth Day 2019
BENGALURU: Monday, April 22 is celebrated as Earth Day across the world, with various events and festivities dedicated to environment and conservation. And it’s not likely that Bengaluru will be left behind. The Rotary Club of Bengaluru, Lalbagh will be launching a 45-day long festival titled ‘Avani’ in the city with a number of talks, art exhibits, bicycle floats, film festivals and performances, all focused on saving the ecology. The events will begin from Monday and will culminate, befittingly, on June 5, which is celebrated as World Environment Day.
'Avani' was first conceived and executed by Rotary Club of Bengaluru, Lalbagh in 2018. The club’s theme is ‘Urban Ecology Redefined’ and aims to raise public awareness about urban ecology, based on the five elements – sky, air, fire, water and earth.
A larger part of this initiative, Belwadi said, was Rotary Club’s aim to improve the ecological awareness and wellness of Bengaluru’s citizens, with urban afforestation and tree planting, air pollution monitoring Green Boards, QR coding of the trees of Lalbagh and RO drinking water installations.

“As a special intervention, we are also planning to provide quality air pollution prevention masks designed by Wipro to 4,000 traffic policemen. They constitute the most vulnerable segment risking prolonged exposure to polluted air,” he said.
Actor and activist Prakash Belawadi, who is leading this event, says that the seeds for this were planted after reports that in a few years, migrant population in urban areas in Indian cities will touch 400 million. “Our cities need to be prepared for it. The air you and I breathe is the same that everyone breathes. So, we all need to be in this together. Ecology goes much beyond religion, caste, language and all other barriers,” he said.

'Avani' will kick off with a panel discussion on Monday at the Bangalore International Centre with experts like IISC Professor Ashish Verma, Wipro’s Hariprasad Hegde and ISRO’s Dr PG Diwakar, among others. Philanthropist Rohini Nilekani will present the keynote address on the convergence of ‘Samaaj, Bazaar and Sarkaar’ for conservation.
A bicycle float to create awareness about endangered species, which is also the theme of Earth Day 2019, will see 10 floats designed by leading installation artists. A parade of these floats will dot city areas like Lalbagh, Sankey Tank, Vidhana Soudha and MG Road from June 1 to 5. Film screenings, plays, musical performances etc. will be held over the course of the festival, at the Bangalore International Centre.

Regular check-ups are vital for a car's top-notch performance. There is a direct link between your car's health and its emissions. A well-maintained car engine is more efficient and burns less gas, further reducing airborne emissions.
Ensure the tire pressure is always inflated to match the manufacturer-recommended Pounds Per Square Inch (PSI) rating. If not, they will need more energy to move and maintain speed, resulting in more gas usage per kilometer. This will further add to the increasing carbon dioxide and other emissions.

While you're always 'raring to go' on the road, treat the red light as a break from the hectic urban life. The easiest, oldest and most efficient emission-cutting hack - switch off the engine at the red light - will work wonders. A running engine in a stopped car is still wasting fuel. Hundred cars stopping at the red light at a time can not only add to emissions, but also increase the particulate matter your fellow drivers are breathing in.

Mandated by the Central Motor Vehicle Rule 1989, the Pollution Under Control (PUC) certifies that a car has passed testing for emissions compliance with national standards. A PUC certificate is a mandatory accompaniment to be carried by drivers at all times. As responsible citizens, we must have our cars tested for PUC certification every six months. By this biannual brief test, we can participate in reducing pollution in a small and significant way.

Using genuine oil and filters will ensure optimum performance of the engine. Low quality parts are not only unreliable, but also result in higher level of pollution. Clogged air filters affect the quality and quantity of the air going into the engine, thereby preventing proper fuel combustion. Not only does it strain the engine, but also reduces the gas mileage, resulting in harmful emissions.
Similarly, if oil filters are congested with impurities, it can lead to reduced oil pressure, damaging the engine and resulting in increased emissions in the longer run. Therefore, it is important we inspect the air and oil filters regularly and get them changed when signs of clogging appear.
