Ranbir Kapoor was recently seen attending the Red Sea Film Festival at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. There, in an interview, he opened up about his box-office disasters 'Shamshera' and 'Jagga Jasoos'.
In his 15-year-old career, Ranbir Kapoor has hit box-office gold many times. However, he also experienced his fair share of disasters. The 2022 period drama ‘Shamshera’ and the 2017 comedy-drama ‘Jagga Jasoos’ are among his most high-profile box-office flops.
In a candid interview with the entertainment website Deadline, Kapoor reminisced on his “disaster films”. Reflecting on ‘Shamshera’, Kapoor said that the movie was one of the “hardest films” he had worked on. Although the movie bombed at the box-office, that was not the reason he regretted doing it. Kapoor revealed the only thing he regretted was wearing a prosthetic beard. “When you’re shooting in the heat, and you stick on a beard, it’s like your face is melting,” he was quoted as saying to the news portal.
Kapoor also spoke about his second “disaster”, the Anurag Basu directorial ‘Jagga Jasoos’. Describing the comedy-mystery as a “passion project” he said that was the film he was personally invested in as a producer, so when it could not rake in moolah at the BO, it hit hard. “ It was a very heartwarming and sweet idea, but it didn’t do well, which really hurt. That’s the only film in my career that hurt me, ” he said.
He also lauded the South Indian film industry for making movies that were culturally rooted without compromising on entertainment. Citing Rajamouli’s phenomenally successful movie ‘RRR’ which grossed more than Rs 12000 crore worldwide, he said, “It’s not taking itself too seriously. It’s got all the songs, dances, action, friendship, and comedy. So it’s a multi-genre film, but those are hard films to make because we try to make them, and they keep failing. So we’re really proud that a film like RRR is making an impact in Hollywood.”
The ‘Sanju’ actor revealed that although he would never discount the possibility of making a full-length English language film, he was “pretty content” with the opportunities he got from Bollywood and was in no rush to cross over to Hollywood. He also admitted that he was most comfortable acting in his native language. “I do have a certain block in my head about acting in English. I’d rather act in my language because it comes naturally to me. But never say never.”
The ‘Brahmastra’ star said that he has plans on directing a movie in the future. But he is still hesitant as writing is not his forte. “I’ve always wanted to direct and make a movie. But I’ve really not mastered the courage to write a story. But I’m working on it, and it’s something that is in my ten-year plan: To start directing movies and hopefully act in them too.”
