In a small PG in the city, a group of young women found a way to bring joy to someone who had quietly given so much to them. Priyakhi Konwar and her friends decided to celebrate the birthday of their cook, Suju Didi, who had always been more than a helper—acting like family during emergencies and caring for them like a mother. What followed was a heartfelt surprise that left everyone, including the PG owner, deeply moved.

Didi: more than a cook

In an interview with Humans of Bombay, Priyakhi Konwar shared that her cook, Suju Didi joined the PG in 2023, quickly becoming a part of the residents’ daily lives. Her care went beyond cooking; she had once rushed a girl who met with a terrible accident to the hospital without hesitation, proving she was more than just staff—she was family. For the young women, Didi’s strength and kindness had always been a constant, but they wanted to give back something meaningful.

Planning the first-ever birthday

Since Didi didn’t know her own birthday, the girls chose Guru Nanak Jayanti to celebrate. They pooled together small contributions to buy a customised cake, a sweater, a bag, and socks. With only a few balloons, they decorated her room quietly, and the PG owner added jalebis for the occasion.

The surprise and the joy

To Suju Didi's surprise, the girls pretended someone was hurt, calling Didi into the room. Initially panicked, she soon realised it was her celebration. She clapped and laughed, slowly cutting the cake, trying on the gifts, and posing for photos. Priyakhi recalls that for the first time, Didi didn’t know what to do—she was happy and excited like a child, finally celebrating her birthday with people who truly cared.

Internet reacts

A netizen shared that doing something for people like this brings a genuinely good feeling. They added that they did not have any videos to share because such moments are meant to be lived, not recorded, and described themselves as old school. For them, giving is an intense emotion, one that connects a person to a deeper sense of oneness. Another commenter called the moment wholesome and said they wished the entire world could be as kind as this. A third user described the gesture as extremely sweet and said the girls deserved blessings for showing such love and respect towards their didi.
