During Melania Trump’s recent trip to Africa, she wore a white pith helmet, which is heavily symbolic of colonial rule. But she’s not the first famous face to get into trouble for her wardrobe choices.

A kolossal mess
Jaws dropped when Victoria’s Secret model Karlie Kloss walked the runway in 2012 — but for all the wrong reasons. Kloss appeared on the runway in a Native America inspired headdress, along with a leather bra and high heels and the backlash was instantaneous.

The Native American community accused the model and the brand of cultural appropriation, for which it apologised and the segment was pulled out of the TV broadcast.

Not in good taste
John Galliano was famously fired from Christian Dior in 2011 after a video of him yelling, “I love Hitler!” went viral. Cut to two years later, the designer was spotted out on the streets of New York wearing a long black coat, large hat and curls styled like peyos to attend a fashion show.

While a representative of Galliano’s insisted he wasn’t trying to mock the traditional Hasidic Jewish garb, given his past statements, many were not appeased.

Facing the anger
Many celebrities just don’t seem to learn from the mistakes of their predecessors. And one of the most offensive looks of all time is blackface — a look that multiple celebrities have for some reason, continued to wear on occasion.

One of the first was Ted Danson who wore blackface in 1993 to his then girlfriend Whoopi Goldberg’s Friars Club Roast. While the crowd laughed, the storm of criticism that swept him up afterwards was not laughable.

Grand goof up
Big fat Indian wedding or an official visit? You really couldn’t tell when the Trudeau family arrived in India earlier this year. The Canadian PM was extravagant in his choice of outfits and was panned by many people for just being so extra.

Justin Trudeau and his family’s attire was so over-the-top traditional, not to mention the perfectly choreographed namastes, that it repeatedly distracted from the purpose of their visit and made the entire trip look like a big costume parade.

Royal Blunder
Prince Harry may be a model royal these days, but there was a time when he was quite the wild child. In 2005, the prince was heavily criticised for wearing a Nazi uniform to a costume party. The prince, who was 20 years old at the time, did apologise for wearing the swastika armband while clutching a cigarette and a drink at a party — pictures that sent royal representatives into overdrive.

Later in 2012, Prince Harry was in the news once more, but this time for what he was not wearing. Photos emerged of the prince at a party in Las Vegas — butt naked and cupping his family jewels.
