Netflix likely to roll out live-streaming for unscripted, stand-up shows

Netflix, which has been in the news for its lacklustre performance in the Indian market, has some interesting plans for its followers. One of the world’s largest streaming services is reportedly exploring live streaming.

If the reports are true, the streamer could go live for the first time. Netflix plans to launch the live streaming service, which according to the company is in the early stages of development. The live streaming service is expected to feature an array of unscripted shows and stand-up specials.

Reports also suggest that the streamer would be using its live streaming for live voting for various competitions and talent shows. Netflix could also be streaming reunions of shows. There is also a possibility that the OTT platform could be broadcasting live sporting events.


Despite several reports suggesting the launch of the live streaming service, it remains unclear if the streamer will be monetising the new service. Recently, it was reported that the streamer was planning to launch a paid password sharing feature and a low budget ad-supported subscription plan.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Netflix lost close to 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2022. The company cited the geopolitical tensions, especially the war in Ukraine, rising inflation, competition and Covid-related disruptions that led to the fall in subscriptions.

In India, the streamer has been overshadowed by Amazon Prime Video with over 17 million subscribers and Disney+Hotstar with over 36 million subscribers as of January 2022. The company hasn’t revealed the number of its subscribers in India, however, market estimates suggested that the figure could be around 4.5 million.
