Mumbai Gallery Weekend set to return with a bang and 23 design venues in focus

Mumbai Gallery Weekend is back again. The largest coordinated art event in the city will be taking place from January 14-17 and will have 22 galleries and design venues participating in the 9th edition.

On the list
Atelier Ashiesh Shah will be showing their brilliant designs at the soon-to-be launched One8 Bungalow (previously Indigo Bungalow) on Mandlik Road, Colaba and Rooshad Shroff’s beautiful pieces will be on view at his spanking new studio in Horniman Circle.

Participating auction houses Pundole’s and Saffronart will be previewing their January auctions. Pundole’s will have their much-awaited auction of modern, contemporary and classical works and Saffronart has a stellar auction of KG Subramnayan works lined up.


All galleries in the city have been open for a while now and have safety protocols in place. It has been a steep learning curve for the galleries and they have been careful to manage visitor numbers; this has meant scaling back on celebratory Art Night Thursday events and preview of new shows.

Tara Lal, gallerist of Chatterjee & Lal says, “This year each participating space will be open to visitors from 12:00 to 8:00 pm daily. Every day will be a preview giving visitors the chance to visit the galleries of their choice on any given day without losing out on the experience of opening night.”

Some street artworks are site-specific, such as Haring’s infamous ‘Crack Is Wack’, a 1986 public project still visible along the Harlem River Drive in New York City. As a way to represent the whole, a distinct element of the work may be replicated in a more portable form.
